WILLOW BRIGHT’S SECRET PLOT is out now!

WILLOW BRIGHT’S SECRET PLOT is out now!

I could not be more excited to let you know that my new middle-grade novel WILLOW BRIGHT’S SECRET PLOT is out today!

Written by me, published by Scholastic Australia, beautiful cover created by Grace Felstead. Isn’t it lovely?

Willow Bright's Secret Plot new from A. L. Tait

It’s the story of Willow Bright, a capable country kid who is transplanted to the inner city in grade six – and quickly decides that it’s not for her.

But while Willow’s busy figuring out how to get home, she also finds herself making unexpected friends, trying to solve a mystery and making space for herself.

I love this review by my Your Kid’s Next Read podcast co-host Megan Daley.

Willow Bright’s Secret Plot’ is warm and witty, full of heart, mystery, and just the right amount of dirt under the fingernails. It weaves themes of identity, belonging, grief, and the shift from country to city living into a super engaging story.

With a subtle thread of gardening running throughout, there is also a reminder that even when you feel out of place, you can still bloom where you’re planted. Perfect for readers 9–12.’

You can read more about the book here.

And you can buy ‘Willow Bright’s Secret Plot’ at your local bookshop or favourite online bookseller (selection below).

PEEK INSIDE WILLOW BRIGHT’S SECRET PLOT

I love the design of the book, with its printed internal covers and a fairy wren motif throughout.

Willow Bright's Secret Plot by A L Tait

It’s dedicated to my cousins because part of Willow’s story involves her cousin Fleur. The two girls are close in age and similar in appearance – but incredibly different people. The unfolding of their developing relationship was a joy to watch and write.

In a thrill for 10-year-old me, ‘Willow Bright’s Secret Plot’ is not only in the current Scholastic Book Club catalogue, but featured on the poster!

Your Kid’s Next Read Favourites 2024: YA

Your Kid’s Next Read Favourites 2024: YA

The Your Kid’s Next Read community now comprises 36,000+ members – and it’s growing every day! Each year, we ask the group to share their young readers’ favourite reads of the previous 12 months.

As is the case each year, some of these books were published in 2024, some were not. There are always new books that bubble to the top straight away, and there are always older books that rediscovered by a new group of readers every year.

Once again, I’ve broken the lists into categories: picture booksearly chapter books (5-7), junior fiction (6-9)middle grade (9-13) and young adult (14+). (NB: There is always crossover, particularly across ages 7-10, as readers develop at their own pace and to their own level of interest, but I’ve done my best to place the books according to expected independent reading age.)

Stand by also for Team YKNR’s favourite reads in 2024, coming soon.

These lists are great starting points when you’re looking for the next great read for your kid/s. Click the title to find out more about each book*.
